Fornlífsöld hófst fyrir um 542 milljón árum og lauk fyrir 241 milljón árum síðan (ICS, 2004) og skiptist í 6 tímabil sem eru frá elsta til yngsta: Kambríumtímabilið,Ordóvisíumtímabilið, Sílúrtímabilið, Devontímabilið, Kolatímabilið og Permtímabilið
